The National Institute of Statistics (INS) is hosting an important regional workshop on the Harmonized Survey of Household Living Conditions (EHCVM) from 27 to 31 January 2025 in Douala. This major event brings together representatives of CEMAC, UEMOA, the World Bank as well as experts from member states.
A strategic workshop for regional statistical harmonization
This technical meeting, which focuses on the prize component of the 2025-2026 edition of the EHCVM, is part of a capacity building and experience sharing dynamic between the participating countries. The INS, with its experience in carrying out ECAM5 (2021-2022) according to the EHCVM methodology, contributes to this regional harmonization of statistical practices.
Cameroon confirms its commitment to the HISWACA project
As part of this workshop, Mr. Joseph TEDOU, Director General of the INS, announced a major news: the official signing of the Financing Agreement of the Project for the Harmonization and Improvement of Statistics in West and Central Africa (HISWACA). The signing process took place in several stages, starting with the signing of Presidential Decree No. 2025/010 on January 8, 2025, followed by the signing by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Development on January 20, 2025, to conclude with the final signature by the Director General of the INS on January 24, 2025.
Towards a modernization of the Cameroonian statistical system
This new step is in line with the efforts to modernize Cameroon’s National Statistical Information System (SNIS). The modernization process was initiated with the adoption of the new Statistical Law in July 2020, followed by the Implementing Decree in December 2021. In this dynamic of progress, Cameroon has set itself the goal of achieving the IMF’s Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) by 2030.
Prospects and commitments
The INS is committed to diligently implementing the recommendations that will emanate from this workshop. This approach is part of a broader desire to strengthen the capacities of the SNIS and to continuously improve the quality of the statistical data produced. The HISWACA project represents a major opportunity for the development of Cameroon’s statistical capacities and its active participation in regional statistical data harmonization initiatives in Central and West Africa.
