Elaboration of business statistics in Cameroon: The INS intends to use administrative sources for the renovation of the ICA

From March 28 to 30, 2023, the INS is organizing, in collaboration with the ECA, a workshop on the implementation of the administrative register and renovation components of the Turnover Index (ICA), as part of the development of business statistics in Cameroon.

The work organized by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), with the support of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), aims to develop the renewed Turnover Index (ICA) from administrative sources. The opening ceremony of this first workshop is chaired by the Director General of the INS, Joseph TEDOU. The three-day work will be attended by a host of actors from the National Statistical System, including ECA officials, representatives of sectoral administrations, public companies and professional groups. The agenda of the workshop includes presentation sessions followed by exchanges, including a series of presentations on the project for the modernization of administrative data in Africa, the inter-administrative directory of economic entities in Cameroon, the development of the ICA; sharing of experiences on the production of official statistics in the Nordic countries from administrative registers and African countries on the use of administrative data for statistical purposes.

In concrete terms, this consultation aims to set up a framework that will allow the main actors, in particular the sectoral administrations producing the databases, to make them available so that the statistical services can exploit their content. As a reminder, the INS benefits from technical and financial support for the implementation of the first two projects, in particular the production of the business register and the exploitation of added value for the production of Turnover Indices. In addition, this approach is an ideal opportunity for Cameroon, which is eager to converge towards the IMF’s Special Data Dissemination Standard, in order to have better visibility and access to financing at a lower cost.
