The National Institute of Statics and the Support Unit for the National Authorizing Officer of the European Development Fund (CAON-FED) signed in December 2019, a Partnership Agreement to develop a Mapping of Cameroonian SMEs. This is intended for the Agency for the Promotion of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (APME) whose main objective is to effectively promote the competitiveness of SMEs.
Once completed, the SME mapping should make it possible to present the current environment of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises; to identify their distribution, precisely by sector of activity, geographical area, age, gender of the promoter, etc. ; to estimate their relative weight and their contribution to the creation of wealth and employment in the different sectors.
The collection initially planned for a period of 04 months, from January to April 2020, has been temporarily suspended, due to the health crisis that is shaking Cameroon and the rest of the world. Therefore, its preparatory phase, marked by the collection of the necessary information from the target companies, has been stopped for the time being.
The primary data to map these SMEs is collected in the field from secondary sources (documents and available databases) developed by the INS and its technical partners. The geographical scope of the study covers the entire national territory, but this first phase of collection focuses on the 23 cities selected upstream, including all the regional capitals. The public and private sectors, including modern SMEs, Informal Production Units and Credit Institutions are the main targets of the survey.
