Situational analysis with structures producing data on the environment and climate change

The overall objective of this activity is to produce an inventory of institutional actors and operations for the mobilization, archiving, valorization and dissemination of environmental data in Cameroon.

Specifically, these are:

  • Identify all national institutions producing or using environmental data and analyse collaboration between them in data exchange;
  • Identify and analyze methodologies for the collection, management and dissemination of environmental data at the national level;
  • Develop collection tools and propose a coherent methodology for the national collection of data necessary to feed the environmental database;
  • Analyze the capacities of the key institutional actors concerned to assume their respective responsibilities, with reference to the methodologies of data collection, processing and dissemination;
  • Assess the material, human and financial resources available to the main institutional actors and their priority needs in terms of essential equipment, human and financial resources, and capacity building;
  • Identify the environmental information systems set up at the level of each institutional actor and examine the possibilities of interconnection with the national database;
  • Examine the modalities of data transfers at the central level;
  • To propose possible improvement measures to be taken by the Government, with the assistance of interested technical and financial partners.

This situational analysis will provide information to develop the collection tools and propose a coherent and specific national data collection methodology for each thematic area contained in the National Environmental Management Programme (NGMP). It will identify relevant and well-targeted actions to help all stakeholders to play their full roles in the process of developing the environmental database.

The main products expected from this work will be presented at an information meeting, extended to all stakeholders, including development partners and civil society organizations, in order to solicit their commitment and multifaceted support for the implementation of the environmental data collection, management and dissemination system developed.

Data collection will take place during the months of November and December 2012. The data is scheduled to be processed in January 2013 while the results will be disseminated in February 2013.
