Vision of the NSDS
With a view to its long-term development vision, Cameroon has developed its new growth and poverty reduction strategy. The objective of this vision is to make Cameroon an emerging, modern and democratic country by 2040. This legitimate ambition, in order to become a reality, will require Cameroon to pursue tirelessly and with ever more vigour and perseverance, the efforts to modernize its apparatus for the production of goods and services, economic and social infrastructure. Issues related to the environment and climate change will need to be at the centre of the long-term development policy and strategy that the authorities will implement.
Projecting this vision in the field of statistics leads us to be equally ambitious, as the national statistical apparatus will have to gradually be able to produce comprehensive, reliable, consistent statistical data that are provided in a timely manner and in a format that promotes judicious use. Such data will be crucial and indispensable for informing the design of development policies and programmes, measuring progress and reporting on development results to Cameroonian society.
Becoming an emerging country by 2040 is a great challenge within Cameroon’s reach. It is therefore important that the national statistical system prepare to play its role in informing strategic choices, policies and programmes.
Rising to the statistical challenge calls on Cameroon to develop a pole of statistical excellence in Africa. Adherence to the protocols of the Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS) is becoming an objective of excellence that Cameroon must aim for. The achievement of this objective will require the constant improvement of the coverage, periodicity and degree of updating of data; public access to this data; data integrity and data quality. This is therefore an important axis of the strategy to be implemented.
