Note on the evolution of household final consumer prices in Douala in February 2021

Food prices are on the rise again

In February 2021 and compared to January 2021, the Household Final Consumer Price Index increased at the same pace as last month (+0.1%), mainly due to the rebound in food prices (+0.5% after -0.1% last month). On the other hand, the prices of “housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels” (-0.4% after +1.0% in the previous month) and those of leisure and culture (-0.1% after +0.2% in the last month) declined. Food prices are on the rise again in line with the increase in the prices of milk, cheese and eggs (+2.9% after -1.8% last month), bread and cereals (+1.0% after +1.8% last month), fish and seafood (+0.5% after -1.5%), meat (+0.2% as last month) and salt, spices and sauces (+10.1% after +0.7% last month). On the other hand, the prices of fruit (-9.9% after +23.4% last month), oils and fats (-1.2% after +5.6% last month) and vegetables (-0.8% after -3.8% last month) fell. The increase in the prices of milk, cheese and eggs is mainly due to the increase in the price of chicken eggs. Prices of bread and cereals are rising in line with the increase in the prices of unprocessed cereals (dry maize grains), flours, semolina and groats (maize flour, wheat flour) and breads (baguette bread, sandwich bread). Fish and seafood prices are on the rise due to the recovery in the prices of frozen fish and other seafood products (mackerel) and fish and other dried or smoked products (“mbouga”, jaw, carp).
