STATISTICAL YEARBOOK OF THE NORTH-WEST REGION

The North-West Region, which is part of the former West Cameroons, is one of the ten regions of Cameroon and one of the two English-speaking regions of the country. Its capital is Bamenda. With a total area of 17,300 km2, the North-West Region is bordered to the north by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the west by the South-West Region and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the east by the West, Adamawa and part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and finally to the south by the Western and South-West regions. Located at an average altitude of 1,550 m above sea level, the Northwest is a region of high plateaus dominated by a mountain range that culminates in the Oku Mountains, at an altitude of more than 3,000 m. The relief, covered with grassy vegetation, offers a captivating spectacle characterized by the panoramic contrast offered by the plains surrounded by mountain ranges, the deep valleys that sometimes shelter rivers cut by waterfalls and numerous crater lakes. Apart from the rainy season (July to October), the region offers a climate for travel throughout the rest of the year. It is a mild and cool climate, with temperatures hovering around 22°C. Bamenda, the main agglomeration and capital of the Region, is a city that is both modern and traditional. It is an important commercial centre and a road junction for the entire region. A 350 km road called “Ring Road” allows the visitor to admire the region in all its tourist diversity: traditional chiefdoms, landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, wildlife reserves, etc.
