The INS is a public administrative institution established by Presidential Decree No. 2001/100 of 20 April 2001. It is placed under the technical supervision of the Ministry in charge of statistics. It has a legal personality and financial autonomy. Its headquarters are in Yaoundé, the political capital of Cameroon.
The Directorate of the National Institute of Statistics is placed under the authority of a Director General, assisted by a Deputy.
The General Management comprises:
- Services Reporting to the Director General;
- Central Services;
- External Services;
Services reporting to the Director General
They include:
- the Inspection of Services;
- the Legal Unit;
- the Communication and Public Relations Unit;
- the Translation and Interpreting Unit;
- the Reception, Mail and Liaison Service;
- Executive Assistants.
External services
They are made up of the Regional Agencies located in the ten (10) Regional Capitals

They include:
- the Department of Demographic and Social Statistics;
- the Department of Business Statistics;
- the Department of Economic Syntheses;
- the Department of Statistical Coordination, Cooperation and Research;
- the Department of Computer Science;
- the Directorate of Administrative and Financial Affairs.
