Statistical activities: the INS supports decentralisation

Optimising the production of local official statistics by reorganising statistical activities in the 10 regions is the objective of the Institute’s new Specifications for Regional Agencies. The document currently being drawn up is in line with the objectives of the 3rd National Strategy for the Development of Statistics (SNDS 3); in particular that of supporting decentralization and local development in Cameroon, over the period 2021-2030.

The INS, strengthened by the socio-economic and environmental changes observed, is committed to the promotion of decentralization, as initiated by the Government. After the evaluation of the implementation of the former specifications of the Regional Agencies carried out by the Institute in 2019, it was revealed that the level of implementation of the activities programmed to be executed was low. Therefore, the new formula will have to place particular emphasis on the method of carrying out activities by involving the decentralised services to a greater extent. The idea is to rely on the needs of the administrations and other decentralised structures of the State; as well as those of the decentralized territorial authorities (CTDs), to produce local statistical data, which can be used by the authorities of each locality. On the basis of the needs identified in each of the 10 regions, medium-term planning of the agency’s statistical activities will be carried out.
