In 2022, about four out of ten people were poor (37.7%). Thus, out of a population estimated at nearly 26.7 million inhabitants in 2022, 10.1 million people live on less than 813 FCFA per day, or 24,724 FCFA per month. This means that in 2022, a worker with just the Guaranteed Interprofessional Minimum Wage (SMIG) of 36,270 FCFA per month, who lives alone, and who does not benefit from any additional income in kind (self-consumption of field products, housing as an owner, etc.) falls into poverty as soon as another person without income is added to the household.
