National accounts in the second quarter of 2020

The second quarter of 2020 was marked by a contraction in economic activity reflected in GDP growth of -1.1% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2019. On the supply side, this contraction is entirely attributable to the decline in activity in the tertiary sector, which recorded a negative contribution of 2.7 points to growth, while the primary (2.1%) and secondary (5.6%) sectors contributed positively to growth by 0.3 points and 1.5 points respectively despite the context of the health crisis. The increase in the primary sector is the result of continued growth in subsistence agriculture, industrial agriculture and exports, which are returning to growth after the poor performance of the previous quarter. The performance of primary education was nevertheless slowed down by the poor performance of silvicultural and forestry activities.
