The National Institute of Statistics (INS) is organizing its Annual Meeting of Heads of Central and Decentralised Services on 6 and 7 February 2025 at its headquarters in Yaoundé. This large-scale meeting is based on the theme: “The development prospects of the Cameroonian economy in the light of climate change: statistical issues and challenges”. on the sidelines of this meeting, the meeting with the Heads of Regional Agencies of the Institute opens on February 5, 2025.

In a global context marked by the climate emergency and its repercussions on economic development, this meeting is of particular importance. It follows the commitments made at COP28 in Dubai and is part of the preparation for COP30 scheduled to take place in Belém, Brazil. At the national level, it is aligned with the orientations of the National Development Strategy 2020-2030 (SND30) which places the environmental dimension at the heart of Cameroon’s development priorities.

Under the chairmanship of the Director General of the INS, assisted by the Deputy Director General, the meeting will bring together about a hundred participants, including the heads of the Institute’s central and decentralized services. The work will focus on four major areas:

– The state of statistics on climate change

– Adaptation of the National Statistical Information System to new climate challenges

– Harmonization of environmental statistics with international standards

– Innovations related to the 2025 Finance Law

Renowned experts, including Ms. FOMO, Head of the Division of Environmental Statistics and Climate Change, and Mr. KANA Christophe, Head of the Division of Cooperation and Applied Research, will lead the sessions alongside other specialists in the field. This meeting aims to strengthen the capacity of the National Statistical Information System to produce reliable and relevant data on climate change, essential to inform policy decisions and measure Cameroon’s progress in this crucial area. The meeting will be preceded, on 5 February, by a special session with the Heads of Regional Agencies, stressing the importance of an inclusive and decentralized approach in the production of environmental statistics.
