The Director General of the INS and the UNHCR Resident Representative in Cameroon signed a memorandum of understanding on February 15, 2024 at 11 a.m. for the implementation of a statistical survey on refugees living in Cameroon. Particular attention will be paid to the forcibly displaced population. This survey will be spread over the months of June and July 2024 throughout the country. The Forcibly Displaced Population Survey was recently introduced by UNHCR to streamline and standardize forcibly displaced population surveys, including those on the social and economic living conditions of refugees, asylum-seekers and nationals living in close proximity to internally displaced persons. Cameroon is one of the three pilot countries among the sixteen in which these surveys will be implemented. By narrowing the gap of lack of information on forcibly displaced populations, the survey conducted by the INS will produce comparable results across the country and beyond; and in line with international standards. Cameroon is home to nearly half a million refugees and asylum seekers combined. Of these, 352,000 are of Central African origin and more than 121,000 are Nigerians.
