{"id":9928,"date":"2023-07-25T14:33:37","date_gmt":"2023-07-25T13:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/?post_type=statistique&#038;p=9928"},"modified":"2025-07-21T14:04:17","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T13:04:17","slug":"english-brief-on-trends-in-household-final-consumption-prices-in-cameroon-in-may-2023","status":"publish","type":"statistique","link":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/statistique\/english-brief-on-trends-in-household-final-consumption-prices-in-cameroon-in-may-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Brief on trends in household final consumption prices in Cameroon in May 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span id=\"page3R_mcid18\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Driven by a 13.7% rise in food prices, average annual inflation stands at 7.5%<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span id=\"page3R_mcid20\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The National Institute of Statistics (NIS) is pleased to<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">publish the brief on <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">trends in household final consumption prices for May 2023. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid21\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Compared to the previous month, the household final consumption <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">prices rose by 0.4% in May 2023, following an increase of 0.7% in April. <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This month\u2019s price increase was mainly<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">as a result of a 1% rise in food prices, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a 0.3% rise in transport costs and a 0.3% rise in costs relating to \u201chousing, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">water, gas, electricity and other fuels\u201d.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid22\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The 1% rise in food prices was mainly due to higher prices for <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">vegetables, \u201cmilk, cheese and e<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ggs\u201d and, to a lesser extent, fish and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">seafood. In contrast, prices of oils and fats continued to fall; prices of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">bread, cereals and fruit declined.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid23\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Transport<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">&#8211;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">related costs rose by 0.3% as a result of the increase in the <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">cost of purchasing vehicles and tr<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ansport services (particularly air <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and road passenger transport). <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid24\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Compared to the same month in 2022, the general price level rose by <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">7.8%<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">in May 2023, mainly as a result of the rise in food prices by 11.8% and <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a 16.2% rise in transport costs. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid25\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">On average over the past twelve months, the inflation rate in May stood <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at 7.5%, exceeding the 3% threshold set by CEMAC.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This increase was <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">mainly as<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a result of the 13.7% rise in food prices and 8.4% rise in prices of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">furniture, household goods and routine maintenance items.<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid26\" class=\"markedContent\"><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The underlying inflation rate<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid27\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">1<\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid28\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">, which excludes the prices of petroleum <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">products and cooking gas in particular, rose to 6.9%, fo<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">llowing an <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">increase of 6.8% in April 2023.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Inflation was not only driven by fresh <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">produce and energy products, whose prices rose by 11.7% and 3.3% <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">respectively. <\/span><\/span><span id=\"page3R_mcid29\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Depending on the product origin, inflation is more local.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">It was greater <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for local products, wh<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ose prices rose by 8.0%, than for imported products, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with a lesser increase of 5.9%.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":0,"template":"","format":[583],"meta":{"_acf_changed":false},"annee":[],"region":[],"domaines":[],"class_list":["post-9928","statistique","type-statistique","status-publish","hentry","format-donnees-2"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/statistique\/9928","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/statistique"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/statistique"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/statistique\/9928\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":16370,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/statistique\/9928\/revisions\/16370"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9928"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"annee","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/annee?post=9928"},{"taxonomy":"region","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/region?post=9928"},{"taxonomy":"format","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/format?post=9928"},{"taxonomy":"domaine","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ins-cameroun.cm\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/domaines?post=9928"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
