138th edition of International Labour Day: NSI committed to decent work for social progress

Apart from the participation in the Great Workers’ March, the celebrationof May 01, 2024 at the National Institute of Statistics was an opportunity to proceed with the official presentation of the recently elected college of staff delegates, as well as that of the office of the INS Staff Mutual Society.

“Constructive social dialogue, a factor for the promotion of decent work and social progress”: this is the theme on which the 138th edition of the International Labour Day (FIT) was celebrated in Cameroonon May 1, 2024. On this occasion, the staff of the National Institute of Statistics took part with joy in the workers’ parade at the Boulevard du 20 Mai. Dressed in an innovative and original uniform, they beat the tarmac to the rhythm of the brass bands planned for the occasion, under the warm applause of the public and the encouragement of the Director General of the Institute.

Later in the afternoon, the INS workers met in a friendly atmosphere after the march in the hall of the Institute’s headquarters building, for a moment of communion around the cocktail offered by the General Management. After the performance of the National Anthem, Mr. KECTHOUM Casimir, newly elected staff representative, took the floor. In his speech, he recalled that as a prelude to the celebration of this FIT, on April 29, 2024 from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., in person and by videoconference, on the theme of the day. Continuing his speech, he outlined the extent of the staff’s demands to improve working conditions and the working environment. These did not fall into rocky soil. The Director General of the INS in his speech took good note of this, promising that measures will be taken to settle what can be resolved in a gradual process. In return, he invited the staff to also be more consistent with the Institute, by adopting responsible behaviour both with regard to the maintenance of the establishment and with regard to their own conduct.

Between the two speeches, the newly elected college of Delegates as well as the very first Executive Board of the Institute’s Staff Mutual (MUP-INS) were officially presented to the General Management. These two structures will have the main responsibilities of preventing abuses by workers and ensuring that their rights are respected; but also to help the staff in the event of a happy or unfortunate event. To enhance the festivities of the General Management and its staff, the artist Keng Godefroy performed some of the key songs of his discography, including the mythical title: “real magic is work”.
