Note on the evolution of household final consumer prices in Yaoundé in March 2021

Food prices continue to rise

In March 2021 and compared to last month, the Household Final Consumer Price Index increased by 0.4% after 0.3% last month. This increase in prices is largely due to higher prices for food products (+0.7% compared to the previous month) as well as clothing and footwear (+1.0% after +0.3% the previous month). The increase in food prices is mainly due to the acceleration of fish and seafood prices (+4.0% after +0.6% last month) and the rebound of fruit (+2.1% after -1.0% the previous month), meat (+1.8% after stability in the previous month) as well as oils and fats (+1.5% after stability in the previous month). On the other hand, vegetable prices fell (-0.9%) after having increased (+2.0%) last month. The increase in fish and seafood prices is related to the soaring prices of frozen fish and other seafood products (mackerel, machoir, sea bass, captain) and the increase in the prices of fish and other dried or smoked products (dried or smoked shrimp, crayfish). Fruit prices are rising in line with the rise in citrus prices (mainly lemon). Meat prices are rising, due in particular to the rise in poultry prices and, to a lesser extent, beef.
