Evolution of activity: 2nd quarter 2012

[rank_math_breadcrumb]

Economic activity was marked during the second quarter of 2012 by an upward trend in the primary sector. Indeed, the “agriculture for industry and export” branch shows a contrasting evolution with a decrease in production in the banana sector followed by an increase in the palm nut sector. The “livestock” branch recorded an overall increase in production, while the “forestry and forestry” branch was distinguished by a considerable increase in log production.

With the implementation of major achievements, industrial activity continued its upward trend in the second quarter of 2012. The seasonally adjusted industrial production index is up 2.9% in comparison with the first quarter of 2012.

This good performance is attributable to the following sub-sectors of activity: chemical and petroleum industries (+13.7%), the “wood, paper and printing” subsector (+6.5%) and the “agri-food” (+2.4%).

On the other hand, the intermediate goods production and construction sector is in poor health (-7.2%). At the same time, the production and distribution of water and electricity remains almost unchanged, as does the level of activity in the textile, rubber and plastics industries.

In the end, if the performance recorded in industries in the second quarter of 2012 is maintained throughout the year, there is a risk of deviating from the growth targets forecast in the GESP for 2012, i.e. 5.5% for the secondary sector.

During the 2nd quarter of 2012, trade and transport experienced the following changes compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011:

  • Increase in imports and decrease in exports at the level of international shipping;
  • Increase in international maritime transport activities;
  • Increase in rail transport indicators;
  • Decrease in road traffic accidents and decrease in the number of injuries and deaths;
  • Increase in the total number of new vehicles sold;
  • Increase in air transport indicators.
