Gender and dynamics of some key health indicators in Cameroon

In September 2015, the United Nations adopted a new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This Agenda, which includes 17 goals, 169 targets and 231 indicators, places people at the centre of development. It is transformative for a better world, shared prosperity, giving equal opportunities to all and ensuring that no one is forgotten. Concerns related to human health and gender equity recur in almost all of the SDGs. Indeed, SDG3 is specifically dedicated to health and well-being; SDG5 is related to gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.
Cameroon has subscribed to these SDGs which are well aligned with its 2035 Development Vision (Vision 2035). Also, in the health sector, the new 2016-2027 strategy has aligned with the SDGs. One of the key actions of this strategy is to improve reproductive health. In addition to the mother/child couple, it is a question of taking into consideration relations of equality between men and women, individual rights in matters of sexuality and fertility, safe motherhood, as well as safe sexuality (fight against sexual violence, excision, sexually transmitted diseases, and unwanted pregnancies, especially of adolescents) (Doris Bonnet & Agnès Guillaume, 2004). This inclusive definition of the concept of reproductive health is consistent with that of the World Health Organization at the 1978 Alma Ata Conference.
In view of the national and international commitments made by Cameroon, this article aims to highlight the trends in certain key health indicators related to gender.
