Note on the evolution of household final consumer prices in Cameroon in May 2024

In May 2024, consumer prices increased by 0.3% month-on-month and by 6.1% on average over the last twelve months.
In comparison with the previous month, household final consumer prices rose by 0.3%, after a 0.6% increase the previous month. This increase is mainly due to the rise in the prices of foodstuffs, those of the “housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels” component as well as transport costs. The increase in food prices can be explained mainly by the increase in the prices of bread and cereals as well as fish and seafood. The increase in the prices of the “housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels” component is mainly due to the increase in the prices of solid fuels. Compared to the same month in 2023 (i.e. year-on-year), the increase is 4.5%, mainly due to the 5.4% increase in food prices and a 12.6% increase in transport costs. It should be noted that this price increase has been gradually declining since a peak of 8.5% in March 2023.
