STATISTICAL YEARBOOK OF THE NORTH WEST REGION

The North West Region, which constitutes part of former West Cameroon, is one of the ten Regions and one of the two English-speaking Regions of Cameroon. Its capital city is Bamenda. It covers a total surface area of 17 300km2. It is bordered to the North by the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the West by the South-West Region and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, to the East by the Adamawa Region, the West Region and part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and finally to the South by the West Region and part of the South West Region. Situated at an average altitude of 1 550m above sea level, the North West is a high land region dominated by a range of mountains. Among these mountains is Mount Oku which is more than 3 000m high. The relief, covered with grassy vegetation, offers a captivating view characterized by the panoramic contrast made by plains surrounded by mountainous with solid masses, deep valleys which sometimes shelter streams, waterfalls and numerous crater lakes. Apart from the part of the period of the raining season that spans from July to October, the Region, for the rest of the year, has a climate that is favourable for travelling. It has a soft and fresh climate, with temperatures that oscillate around 22°C.
Bamenda, the main agglomeration and headquarters of the Region, is an important commercial centre and a crossroads for the Region. Through the “Ring Road”, which is 350km long, visitors can admire the touristic diversity of the Region: traditional chiefdoms, landscapes, lakes, waterfalls, forestreserves, etc.
